Q. look at the transitions between paragraphs or between sections. how does she make these transitions? what effect do they have on the forward momentum of the piece?
A. Patricia Smith does different types of transitions with the many different poems in the book. for some of the paragraphs she keeps the sentencens tight so you can read them straight through and for othere she uses alot of spacing in between the sentences to create pauses so you can feel the effect of each line you are reading. I think having the different transitions keeps the momentum going because some are straight forward and then some peoms are a bit slower so the reader will know that there has been a change in the emotion of the poem.
